Justice in mining towns

- Justice during the California gold rush was swift and usually harsh. One of the towns that became infamous for its swift justice has retained its appropriate name to this day: Hangtown. A stuffed dummy still hangs from one of the historic buildings.

- The community of Auburn, on the other hand, was known for its smooth judicial workings. Its majestic courthouse, one of the oldest in the West, still invites visitors to partake in its museum depicting local gold country history. Other historical artifacts throughout the town give Auburn a rustic feel to it and portray the resident's fondness for the town's heritage.
