Guadalupe Hidalgo
- The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signified an end to the war between Mexico and the U.S. This event gave the U.S. the territory previously belonging to Mexico that included what is now Upper California, New Mexico, and Texas. The Treaty was agreed to by the sale of these lands for $15 million.
- The news reached the American federal government on August 6, 1848, finally meeting President Polk's goal. After the change in ownership, the existing residents had the option to either become American citizens or leave the new American territories.
