Quisling

Vidkun Abraham Lauritz Jonsson Quisling was born in 1887 in Fyresdal, Norway.  He began his military career very early, beginning military school at age 18.  Quisling attended this military school  from 1905 to 1908, and was the top of his class.  He became a captain in 1917; his area of expertise was in aviation.  He then began the Norwegian Nazi Party, a small party with little political following.  This party became the fifth columm for an internal attack on Norway.  In the start of the war Quisling held many conferences with Hitler and his associates to convince them of the necessity of Norway in their plans of conquest.  When the invasion of Norway actually occurred Quisling planned to take over the Norwegian government.
On April 9th, 1940, the royal family and members of Parliament were forced to leave the capitol and retreat to Elverum, 50 miles from the Swedish boarder.  In the absence of the government Quisling had a chance to step forward with his own cabinet.  He immediately received the backing of Rosenborg and Hitler.  The unrest in the German occupied territories came more from objection to a Quisling government than objection to the German occupation.  Within Norway, Quisling was regarded by the people as a traitor and it was apparent that he could never set up a viable form of government.  Even today in Norway the word quisling is a synonym to traitor.
