By mid-May the damaged German warships had been repaired and were ready to sail again. ON May 24th Hitler ordered the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenua, the cruiser Hipper, and four destroyers were to penetrate into And Fjord and the area between Vaags Fjord to Harstad, and destroy all bases, transports, and warships in the region. On the 27th, Hitler included in the mission an attempt to control the coastal supply line for the 2d Mountain division in the Trondheim area. On June 4th the ships left Kiel, and the attack on Harstad occurred on the evening of the 8th. The Scharnhorst and Gneisenua luanched their planes which sunk the troop transporter, the Orama, which was empty except for about 100 German prisoners. At 16:45 on the 8th, the British aircraft carrier the Glorious was spotted accompanied by the destroyers, the Ardent and the Acosta. After about an hour and a half of combat the Germans succeeded in sinking the aircraft carrier and both destroyers. The Scharnhorst however was damaged, and the Nuernberg was dispatched to join the operation. As the German warships moved on north to Trondheim, the Gneisenua was hit by a torpedo from a British submarine. On the 28th after repairs were finished the Gneisenua returned to Kiel accompanied by the Nuernberg and the Hipper. During JUNO the Bremen and the Europa had successful occupied Iceland. With the use of the bases in Trondheim and Iceland, Germany could now engage England in the Battle of Britain.
