| Wells Fargo merged with the American Trust Company and acquired approximately 102 branches in Northern California. The American Trust Company wanted to focus on retail banking and they adopted the western symbol of the Concord Stagecoach. One of the advertising logos for this year was, "Hold Up a Stagecoach." | ||

| Wells Fargo & Company helped to introduce the credit card Master Charge. The Master Charge name was later changed to Master Card in 1979. | ||
