Camp Kearny

Established July 18, 1917
in honor of
Brigadier General Stephen Watts Kearny

Camp Kearny was established on July 18, 1917.  It was established in honor of General Stephen Watts Kearny.  This camp was one of many that soldiers would stay at on their way to the battlegrounds of World War One.  Camp Kearny used to be located in San Diego but no longer exists.  The camp was not finished being built until after the war but after finished it was used as a demobilization center.   Although there was no official airfield, Army aircraft would land at the Camp on occasion.  Even after the war the  government held onto the land to use as an airfield for military and civilian use.  It was not until May 1, 1946 that the Navy left Camp Kearney and it then turned in to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.  The old runways were then improved and a Master Jet Base was put in its place.
