31st Infantry, United States Army

"This Shanghai Bowl was presented to the 31st Infantry by the officers who served with the Regiment at Shanghai, during the Sino-Japanese hostilities in 1932. It is a memento of that unique service."
From: 31st Infantry's Organization Day program, p. 4

The 31st U.S. Infantry is unique in that it was the only unit in the Philippine Division to consist only of Americans. No Filipino troops were ever assigned to it. Before World War II it had over 2,100 members. While some died in battle, the vast majority died as Prisoners of War in the Bataan Death March, in the POW camps, or on the hell ships. The following gives a little insight into this unique regiment and makes the fatality statistics of World War II not as impersonal.
