After
Lt. Harmon landed in the lake near the
Yangtze river, he had managed to stay underneath his parachute until
the Zeros circling overhead had left. Relieved that the Zeros had
left and that he was still alive, he
decided to make some plans. Lt. Harmon showed up to base
after 32 days behind
enemy lines wearing the
uniform of a Chinese Soldier. On December 2,
1943, while Lt. Harmon was still in China, a New York Times article
reported that he had been aided by
Chinese guerrillas using a version of the Civil War Underground
railroad. However, the details on how he was
able to evade capture by the Japanese remains classified.
