It took
four months to reassemble Ms. Liberty on the Pedestal which the Americans
had designed. For the
unveiling,
Bartholdi arrived accompanied by his wife and by Count Lesseps. A
military and civic parade filled the streets of New York. The unveiling
took place on October 28, 1886 and it was declared a general holiday. President
Grover Cleveland was present, along with Secretaries of the Interior,
State, War and Navy. Governors and French and American notables of
the day participated in the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening
the World. On October 15, 1924, thirty-eight years after its unveiling,
the statue was designated a National Monument.
Today,
after more than one hundred years, Miss Liberty has been the symbol of
America. She has witnessed the arrival of millions of immigrants
from every corner of the planet that have come to shape the character of
our nation. She has been, and still is, one of the most visited monuments
in the world. It comes as no surprise that the statue remains
today linked in the minds of many Americans as a powerful symbol of political
freedom and economic opportunity. (7)
