WWII - Records Related to Criminal Case 31712, U.S. v. Iva Ikuko Toguri D'Aquino, Treason ("Tokyo Rose Case"), 1942-1969 18 multi-page documents have been digitized. WWII-Central Photographic File of the War Relocation Authority (WRA), 1942-1945 3715 photographs have been digitized from this series. Professional photographers, including Dorothea Lange, were commissioned by the WRA to document the daily life and treatment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. These photographs show Japanese-Americans at home and at work immediately prior to evacuation; evacuees at assembly centers where they were processed before being assigned to relocation centers; agricultural, vocational, educational, recreational, religious and internal political activities at each of the ten relocation centers, supervisory personnel and local officials; Nisei resettled in their former homes or at work after releases from a relocation center; Nisei servicemen and women at awards ceremonies or on leave; the arrival and departure of evacuees who were transferred from one of the relocation centers to the Tule Lake Segregation Center in September 1943, including a few photographs of repatriated Japanese-Americans embarking for Japan; property formerly owned by Japanese-Americans, but vandalized, deserted, or taken over by Chinese-Americans and others. WWII-Destruction of the S. S. Montebello, 1941-1946 12 documents have been digitized from this series. This series is composed of a single file documenting the December 23, 1941, sinking of the steam tanker S. S. Montebello. The tanker was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine in coastal waters near San Simeon, California. The tanker had departed from Port San Luis Obispo loaded with crude oil for delivery to Vancouver, BC. WWII-Application for Writ of Habeas Corpus Cases, 1900-1952 34 documents have been digitized from this series of case files from the United States District Court, District of Hawaii. Application for writ of habeas corpus cases generally involve not guilt or innocence per se, but rather the issue of whether a prisoner is restrained of personal liberty in violation of due process of law. In the United States for instance, such due process is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. The function of the writ, if granted, is to release one from illegal imprisonment. Documents filed in this group of federal cases from the Territory of Hawaii relate mainly to the following issues: Immigration and Naturalization Service detention of individuals prior to deportation, or denial of US entry on grounds that service in the Imperial Japanese Navy negated US citizenship; peonage; double jeopardy claims by individuals tried under Republic of Hawaii laws and later charged in US federal courts; and attempts to contest US military imposition and continuation of martial law in the Territory of Hawaii.These materials are held by NARA's Pacific Region (San Francisco, CA). Selected Documents from the Atomic Energy Commission, Oak Ridge Operations Office, 1944-1968 18 multi-page documents have been digitized from this series. These records were created or collected by the Assistant Manager for Public Education in an effort to inform the public of the activities of the Manhattan District and later the Atomic Energy Commission. The records also reflect the effort of the AEC to promote the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Selected Images Relating to Civil Defense and Nuclear Energy, Explosions, and Testing, 1925-1964 54 photographs relating to civil defense, the atomic bomb, and other nuclear issues have been digitized. Among the digitized images are photographs of civil defense fall-out shelters, military participation in atomic tests, individuals involved with the development of nuclear power, "Operation Crossroads", the "Manhattan Project", the effects of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts, the 60 inch cyclotron at the University of California Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, and the first nuclear reactor in the West Stands section of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. Immigration Investigations Files Relating to the Enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion Acts, 1882-1943 63 documents have been digitized which relate to the Chinese Exclusion Acts. Most records of immigration investigations files relate to the enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion Acts during the years 1882-1943 and are among the records of Immigration and Naturalization Service district offices and United States district and circuit courts. The original act was passed as a temporary measure to restrict "Chinese laborers," but was extended and harshened by later legislation. Photographic Negatives of Native American Delegations and Archaeology of the Southwestern United States, 1879-1907 272 photographs have been digitzed from this series. This series consists of original glass plate negatives collected by the Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. Several of the photographs are identified by the names of the anthropologists on whose trips they were made, including William H. Holmes, James Mooney, R.G. Fuller, F.K. Vreeland, David I. Bushnell, Jesse W. Fewkes, and brothers Cosmos and Victor Mindeleff. Additionally, some of the photographs are identified as having been taken by Delancey Gill, who worked as a photographer for the Smithsonian Institution. American Unofficial Collection of World War I Photographs, 1917 - 1918 - (added to NAIL 7/6/98) 178 photographs have been digitized from the photographic files of the Historical Branch, War Plans Division, War Department General Staff. These were assembled by the Committee for Public Information and considered to be the "Unofficial Collection of World War I Photographs". They were obtained from private sources, the U.S. Army Signal Corps, and other Federal and State government agencies. Some private sources may still hold copyrights. Some of the photographs depict the unity of the nation and how overwhelming the war effort was. Others document Women's Suffrage, African Americans who served in the military, and the effects of the Flu Epidemic. These records are held by the Still Pictures Branch (College Park, MD). President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island, March 29 - April 30, 1979 - (added to NAIL 7/6/98) 28 photographs from this series have been digitized. The color photographs cover the period between March 29 and April 30, 1979 and were acquired by the Department of Energy through a contract with EG and G, a photographic services company. This series contains aerial photographs of the TMI plant, facilities and surrounding countryside, as well as photographs of the post accident activities.
