NOTE: The following titles are arranged alphabetically. Refer to the CATLOGS entry for publishers and distributors.

ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL (published for Mac/Windows at $49.95) "If greatness lies in the contributions we make to the world, then Alexander Graham Bell is one of history's truly great men. As the inventor of thetelephone, he ushered in a new age of telecommunications. Although born into an age of horsedrawn carriages, he helped create a world of airplanes and hover-crafts. Before Bell, deaf children were isolated in a world oftheir own. By teaching them to speak, he drew them closer into the human family. Almost one hundred years after his death, Bell remains a contemporary figure. His work in the fields of aviation, genetics, and geophysics helped shape the world as we know it. Bell not only foresaw the present age, he helped create it. His photophone was an ancestor of today's fiber optictechnology. He foresaw the day when we would use solar panels to storeenergy and binary systems, today's computer, to process information. This multimedia CD explores the life and times of Alexander Graham Bell. Over 1,000 historical photographs and 65,000 wordsof text, reveal Bell as teacher, inventor, and family man. Over 40 minutes of videotaped interviews with his friends and family depict the excitingtimes they all lived through. 3-D interactive models allow users to examinethe HD-4 and Silver Dart from every angle. Beinn Bhreagh, Bell's summerhome, is captured in interactive, 360 degree panoramic photographs. Through the use of a topic navigator, users can retrace the path of Bell'slife, examining the milestones along the way. Children and adults alikewill enjoy recreating his experiments." (WAE)

Also fascinating are once-classified interviews conducted by Allied intelligence with such Wehrmacht luminaries as Heinz Guderian, Joachim Peiper, ace-commando Otto Skorzeny (whose parachutists contributed so much to the attack's early success), and the notoriously brutal SS commander Sepp Dietrich."

BEYOND THE WALL (published 1996 for Mac/Windows at $49.98) "treats the Vietnam war, Vietnam veterans and the Wall in a straightforward, unbiased manner through a beautiful and sensitive interface. The section Tour of the Wall includes in depth portraits of several of the casualties on each of four panels of the wall, with pictures, narrations, letters to family and friends. Particularly touching are the tapes to the families at home. The user can also examine several dozen momentos which left at the Wall, gaining an insight into not only the people behind the names on the Wall, but those left behind: the buddies, childhood friends, relatives who leave Vietnam momentos, pictures, stuffed animals, clothing, letters, medals, trophies, anything that symbolizes the loving bond of the living for the dead. The section on the Vietnam War covers the Official Reason through Homecoming, with brief and objective essays, video, pictures, letters and narration. What it was like to serve in Vietnam is related through short audio clips from veterans from all branches and military occupations, letters home, and photos. The story of the Wall includes video of the construction, information on the engraving of the panels, and images of the designs from the design competition. A searchable database of the names is included, and results of the search can be printed. Narrated by Adrian Kronauer. Highly recommended as a source for unbiased general information on the war in Vietnam as well as for the sensitive treatment of those who died there, and those who came home. Beyond the Wall won the New Media Invision Award "Best of Show" at Spring COMDEX June, 1996. For MPC. This disc requires a 256 color video setup." (WAE)

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IN AMERICA (published for MAC/Windows at $195.00) "This extraordinary multimedia CD profiles the coming of the industrial age to America, the rise of the robber barons, and the countervailing force of the labor unions. Period songs and original film footage bring to life the feeling of an age when all was possible and everything was changing. Students will learn about Francis Lowell, who established the first modern factory, Eli Whitney, who revolutionized the work-place by introducing the first machine-made, fully interchangeable metal parts. This in-depth review discusses the personalities behind the inventions, and the profound effects of mechanization on America - the mass migration of workers to the cities and the revolution of transportation that occurrd with the railroad. The CD also documents the rise of the large-scale corporation and three men Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan - who represented a new breed of businessman. This program includes first-hand accounts of the struggle for workers' rights, Eugene Debs and the unionization movement, and massive resistance to the effors to organize. From mechinization to corporation to unionization, this program traces the dramatic transformation of the American workplace. USA WARS: VIETNAM (published for Mac/Windows at $29.95) "is a comprehensive collection of documents, statistics, tables, photos, books, articles, and photos encompassing the subject of the Vietnam conflict. Warning! Because this disc has been in production for about 3 years with no update, there may be problems with the video driver on the PC version if your computer has a newer hi-res SVGA card; it is an excellent resource, however, for those with older machines with plain vanilla VGA or monochrome cards, or with Macs. It remains the only true CD reference title on the Vietnam conflict, and there lies its value. Background materials cover Vietnamese history prior to American involvement and historical documents pertaining to our involvement in Southeast Asia. Many of these memos, telegraphs, and letters were considered secret at the time. A complete section is devoted to Agent Orange; it contains data, definitions, historical documents, bibliographies, & legislation concerning Agent Orange. An impressive Bibliography section contains in the range of 1000 entries, perhaps more. A Biography section contains information concerning most of the political & military figures prominent in the conflict; photos accompany many of the biographies. The Glossary sections contains over 1600 entries, many with photos. The Wall category lists the 58136 entries on The Wall at the time the database was published. The information in the database includes the full Wall information on each name. Equipment, Glossary, Biography sections also contain many links to the over 450 photos, which are, unfortunately, in the early low-res VGA format. All databases are searchable using standard search procedures (and, or, not and * wildcard for endings). A total of ten search terms may be combined for complex searches of the individual category, or over the entire 14 categories. Results of the search may be printed. The browse mode allows previous record and next record paging, as well as page up and page down in each separate entry. Most of the text items span several pages, and some run to book length, broken into several records for easier access." (WAE)

VIDEOHOUND MULTIMEDIA (published by Visible Ink Software 1994 for Windows, $79.95) includes the large movie database from Visible Ink's book _VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever_ that I have found to be one of the most valuable sources of information about 22000 films on videotape and laserdisc, 26000 performers and 6000 directors. The CD-ROM edition adds 30,000 more TV shows, cartoons, sports, music, fitness, and documentary videos. It has excellent search capabilities, although weak on multimedia and no video. Reviewed by T. VIETNAM, A VISUAL INVESTIGATION (published for WIN at $47.95) "is primarily a political publication, unabashedly presenting the anti-war position on the most controversial US military conflict since the Civil War. Controversy, however, requires more than one viewpoint, and the omission of other viewpoints is the weak point of this disc, eliminating it an objective research source. The Dictionary of Vietnam section does contain much general information on the conflict itself in the form of brief entries on units, operations, weapons, etc. The maps are few and lack in detail, and the main map of Southeast Asia is a post-war version, lacking even a clear representation of the partition line or the DMZ, with no delineation of the corps tactical zones and province boundaries at that time, rendering it almost useless for referencing from text on the disc. There are a number of political documents, but no useful military analysis. The sparse text on operations and events is flawed by mid-sentence truncation of the text on Tet 68 and Khe Sanh, in both cases leaving the reader with the erroneous impression that both were military victories for the NVA and the Viet Cong. Technically the disc is very well done, with good video and a lot of photos although the relentless background sounds from an old John Wayne movie could be annoying to some users. If you hated the war, you'll love the CD." (WAE)

YELLOW STAR (published for Mac/Windows at $19.99) "The persecution of the Jews in Europe from 1933 to 1945 This CD-ROM contains disturbing subject matter. Viewer discretion is advised "From the day I was liberated from the concentration camp, I have devoted my life to tracking down those people responsible for these crimes. Most of us who survived the camps are no longer alive and meanwhile, half of the world's population have been born since the war. It's important that we who survive inform people who are too young to know the past from personal knowledge. The murder of 6 million Jews must never be reduced to a statistic. We must not only remember the dead, we must also explain what happened to them and why. Only in that way can we keep such a disaster from ever happening again. The film The Yellow Star is an important document, it serves as a rememberance, a lesson and a warning."Simon Wiesenthal This educational CD-ROM features an easy to use table of contents for reference to specific topic or dates, a researched index and an extensive glossary of relevant German terms. The Yellow Star is one of the most important learning tools to be released this year, an attempt to preserve and consolidate information and footage about the atrocity that occurred under the tyranny of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich."
