V-J Day

Victory over Japan was announced August 14, 1945, by President Truman at a White House press conference. People filled the streets to celebrate, and Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstadt was in Times Square when he made the photograph of sailor George Mendonsa kissing nurse Greta Friedman. Navy photographer Lt. Victor Jorgensen was at the same location and took the same kiss from a different angle.
