Pre- registration and on-site registration: To pre-register for the conference, housing, meals, and the special events, please complete the enclosed registration form and return as directed by July 15, 1998. On Thursday. August 6, packets for those who pre-register will be available at the registration desk in the lobby of the Alcala Vista Apartments, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Friday & Saturday, August 7 and 8, on-site registration at the University Center will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m.; on Sunday, August 9, registration will resume at 8:30 and continue until 10:00 a.m. The Registration desk will have information on the tours and special sights in San Diego as well as function as a message center.
Housing and Food Service: To make the convention enjoyable. convenient. and economical, the PEB has negotiated a housing and food service package with the University of San Diego. For three nights lodging (Thursday, Friday. and Saturday) and three breakfasts the cost is only $164 ($55 per day) per person for double occupancy and $203 ($68 per day) for single occupancy. For two nights lodging and two breakfasts the charges are $128 ($64 per day) for double and $154 ($77 per day) for single. As long as their two parents are booked in one bedroom and they bring their own bedrolls. children ages five to twelve can stay at a cost of only $15. There is no charge at all for children under age five. All who register for the convention will have access to the University swimming pool, which is adjacent to the Alcala Apartments. Check-in time begins at 3:00 p.m. and check-out is 10 a.m. Reservations for lodging and food service are made through the PCB and simultaneously with registration for the convention. You will find the required registration form at the center of this program. Please return it to the specified address by July 15, 1998. Refunds for housing and food service, less $10.00 for handling, will be made for written requests received prior to July 15, 1998.
Off-campus Housing: Although the success of the San Diego Convention requires that most participants purchase the convention housing and food service package, some may prefer to stay off campus. In the vicinity are several hotels that would welcome convention patronage. These include the Ramada Inn (619-260-8500), Padre Trails Inn (619-297-3291), Hacienda Hotel (619-298-4707), and Comfort Inn (619-543-1130). Single rates range from $69 to $130; double rates range from $79 to $140, plus 9% tax. Please note that the PEB is required to assess registrants who do not purchase the convention package, i.e. stay off campus or drive to campus from their homes, a $15 commuter fee.
Public transportation from the Airport: The University of San Diego is only 10 minutes away from San Diego International Airport. Regular cab fare for the trip is approximately $15. Cloud Nine Shuttle provides frequent service to the university for $9 one way. There is no need to make reservations. Go to the shuttle island at the airport and ask the attendant to call a Cloud Nine vehicle. At least thirty Cloud Nine Shuttles are at the airport and on call at any one time. Parties of six or more will be taken directly to USD.
Directions to USD by car: From the North: Use 1-5 South, exit Sea World Dr. and Tecolote Road and proceed left at stoplight toward Morena Blvd. Turn right on Morena, left on Napa, and left on Linda Vista Road. Follow Linda Vista past both West and East entrances of the campus to the Alcala Vista Apartments (the first entry on the left past the East entrance).
From the South (or the airport): Use 1-5 North, exit Morena Blvd. (signs will say: Morena Blvd. use 1-8 East). Stay to the right and follow the signs for Morena Blvd. Take the first right onto Linda Vista Road. Follow Linda Vista as recommended above.
From the East: Use 1-8 West, exit at Morena Blvd., and follow the directions as indicated above.
Parking: Those availing themselves of the convention package will find more than enough parking at the Alcala Apartments. Individuals who drive to the convention on a daily basis, either from their homes or from off-campus housing, can park in the university's new parking pavilion adjacent to the East entrance of the campus. Please note again that registrants in this last category must pay a $15 commuter fee at the time of registration.
Weather: August in San Diego is heavenly. Temperatures can range from 75-85 degrees with virtually no humidity. Evenings can be cool (jacket or sweater weather) and the coast is usually cooler and breezier than the city.
Book Exhibit: Richard Koenigsberg, Ph.D, of the Library of Social Science will be organizing the book exhibit for this year's meeting. We are relying on your input to make sure that books you have authored are displayed at the conference and to help develop a collection reflecting the "state of the art" in modern historical studies.
