By the end of the war, 1.39 million American soldiers saw active duty of the 2.08 million sent to France. Of the 42 divisions sent to France, 29 saw action, including 7 Regular Army divisions, 11 National Guard Divisions, and 11 in the National Army. Americans fought for 200 days in 13 major engagements. According to official Military Casualty Information statistics from Department of Defense, the American losses were 53,402 killed in combat, and 63,114 dead from other causes such as disease including 38,815 in domestic training camps and 4,503 dead from accidents and about 1000 dead from suicide, totaling 116,516 deaths. The number of wounded was 204,002 Americans (Allies lost 7,485,000 casualties in the 4 years of war). Another 41,000 were sent home with shell-shock and many would be hospitalized for life. The cost of war to the United States was $33 billion, including $10 billion loaned to allies.
